MVPs Van Hoosier, Sewald go deep; Sunrise, Sunset all-stars settle for tie

There were no sightings of baseball commissioner Bud Selig on Thursday night at Morse Stadium, but after playing to a tie in a compelling all-star game, local high school players weren’t looking for anyone to complain to.

Green Valley’s Evan Van Hoosier hit two home runs to help the Sunrise Region gain an 11-11, nine-inning tie with the Sunset in the Southern Nevada Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game at College of Southern Nevada.

Van Hoosier was named the game’s Sunrise Most Valuable Player after he went 3-for-3, knocked in four runs and scored three. His other hit was a double.

“It’s definitely great coming out here with all these guys who are your rivals all year, coming out and playing together,” Van Hoosier said. “It’s definitely a good time, whether it’s a tie, we win or they win. It’s all for fun.”

Sunset MVP went to Bishop Gorman outfielder John Sewald, who was 3-for-4 with a two-run, inside-the-park home run off the center-field wall in the second. He added an RBI single in the fifth.

Basic’s Dean Gettman scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to give the Sunrise an 11-10 lead.

But Faith Lutheran’s Caleb Summerhays scored on an error to tie the game at 11 with two outs in the eighth.

Coronado’s Cody Howard hit a two-run homer in the first and finished 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs for the Sunrise, which had six doubles.

Spring Valley’s Drew LaComb was 2-for-2 with a triple for the Sunset, and Gorman’s Justin Jones hit a two-run double to center to tie the game at 10 in the sixth.

Arbor View's Evan McMahan struck out the side in the fifth.

In the earlier Senior Exhibition, the Sunrise scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and beat the Sunset, 8-7.

NOTE — Former Eldorado, Durango and Spring Valley coach Mike Gomez was inducted to the SNBCA Hall of Fame. Gomez guided Eldorado (1990) and Durango (1999) to state titles.
