Kelley’s record-setting day helps Gorman boys to Sunset Frosh-Sophomore title

Kyle Kelley set a meet record in the long jump and won the 400-meter race Saturday to help Bishop Gorman’s boys track team capture the Sunset Region Freshmen-Sophomore Championships at Arbor View.

Kelley traveled 21 feet, 5 inches to take the long jump and won the 400 in 50.93 seconds.

The Gaels had 121 points. Bonanza, which got four wins from Jayveon Taylor, was second with 109 points. Shadow Ridge took third with 77.5.

Taylor was part of the Bengals’ 800 relay team that set a meet record with its win in 1:31.12. Taylor also won the 100 (10.71) and 200 dashes (21.86) and ran a leg on the Bengals’ winning 400 relay team (44.34).

Shadow Ridge’s Nicholas Oberdin took the 800 run in 2:03.31 and the 1600 run in 4:37.98 and ran a leg on the Mustangs’ winning 3200 relay team that finished in 8:43.21.

GIRLS

Clarissa Maxey won two individual events and ran a leg on a record-setting 1600 relay team to help Faith Lutheran claim the girls team title.

The Crusaders had 112.5 points. Desert Oasis took second with 76.2 points. Bishop Gorman was third with 67, followed by Arbor View with 63.7.

Maxey took the 100 in 12.37 and the 200 in 25.75. She also ran a leg on the Crusaders’ 1600 relay team that set a meet record by winning in 4:11.4.

Palo Verde’s Marissa Suan swept the distance races, winning the 1600 in 5:18.89 and the 3200 in 11:48.07.

Bonanza’s Sianna Nelson won the 300 hurdles in 48.88 and the triple jump with a mark of 34-7½.
