ROUNDUP: McMillan’s distance triple lifts Valley boys to win

Valley’s Alec McMillan swept the distance events Tuesday to lead the Vikings’ boys track and field team to victory in a home tri-meet.

McMillan won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 7.2 seconds. He also took the 1,600 (4:47.0) and 3,200 (10:42.0).

Arphaxad Carroll added wins in the triple jump (43 feet, 1 inch) and long jump (21-4) for Valley, which finished with 86 points. Canyon Springs had 51, and Chaparral 49.

Donnel Pumphrey won the 100 (10.9) and 200 (22.2) for Canyon Springs.

Chaparral’s William Hernandez took the shot put (51-6) and discus (140-8).

Matthews, Sherwood pace Sierra Vista
At Sierra Vista, Kyle Matthews and Alex Sherwood each won two events as the Mountain Lions topped visiting Desert Oasis, 83-63.

Matthews won the 110 hurdles (18.4) and 300 hurdles (44.3), and Sherwood was first in the long jump (17-8¾) and triple jump (39-8½).

Desert Oasis’ Jacob Benham won the shot put (50-7) and discus (128-11), and Frankie Martinez was first in the 800 (2:15.6) and 1,600 (4:51.0) for the Diamondbacks.

Johnson, Rams top Jaguars
At Rancho, Charles Johnson won the 200 (22.5) and was second in the long jump (19-10) to lead the Rams to a 91-43 win over Desert Pines.

Leon Flintroy and Allen Vaiao each won two events for the Jaguars. Flintroy was first in the 100 (11.2) and long jump (20-6), and Vaiao took the shot put (43-3) and discus (120-4).

Wisner, Villarreal lead Cougars
At Coronado, Blake Wisner won both hurdle events, and James Villarreal captured both throws to lead the Cougars to a 90-56 win over Foothill.

Wisner won the 110 hurdles in 16.1 seconds, and the 300 hurdles in 43.2. Villarreal took the shot put with a toss of 47-7½, and the discus with a throw of 125-11.

Thompson, Mustangs win four-team meet
At Faith Lutheran, DeShawn Thompson placed first in three events to lead Shadow Ridge to victory in a four-team meet.

Thompson tied for first in the 100 (11.78), won the 200 (23.58) and paced the winning 800 relay team as the Mustangs finished with 125½ points. Faith Lutheran was second at 74, followed by Virgin Valley with 54 and Beaver Dam (Ariz.) with 8½.

Shadow Ridge’s Aaron Collins won the 110 hurdles (16.9), the triple jump (41-7) and was second in the 300 hurdles (42.0).

Faith Lutheran’s Joseph Klagues won the shot put (47-0) and discus (144-8), and Mark Rubalcaba added wins in the high jump (5-8) and long jump (19-2) for the Crusaders.
