CLASS 1A: Hughes’ layup lifts Sandy Valley to win

Brandon Hughes’ layup with 15 seconds remaining Wednesday allowed Sandy Valley’s boys basketball team to post a 36-35 win over visiting Tonopah in a Class 1A Southern League quarterfinal.
The fourth-seeded Sidewinders (13-6) rallied from a 33-26 deficit after three quarters to collect the first boys basketball postseason win in school history. They’ll face top-seeded Pahranagat Valley at 8 p.m. Friday at Sunrise Mountain.
Randal Spencer tallied 17 points, and Hughes scored 13 for Sandy Valley.
Round Mountain 62, Beatty 61 — At Round Mountain, Serjio Chavez’s short jumper just before time expired in double overtime sent the third-seeded Knights (18-4) past the sixth-seeded Hornets (9-7).
Chavez, who missed a jumper at the end of regulation, had 25 points for the Knights, who will meet Spring Mountain at 4:40 p.m. Friday at Sunrise Mountain.
Cole Shrider added 14 points, including a basket with 1.6 seconds left in the first overtime, for Round Mountain.
GIRLS
Lund 41, Indian Springs 26 — At Lund, Melynda Boren tallied 12 points, and the fourth-seeded Mustangs (12-7) advanced to the semifinals by elminating the fifth-seeded Thunderbirds (13-7).
Alexxa Reinke and Baylee McCormick each had eight points for Indian Springs.
