RECRUITING: Gorman’s Scoggins commits to New Mexico

Ron Scoggins has been part of a dynasty in high school football, winning three straight Class 4A state titles at Bishop Gorman.

The senior offensive guard wants to contribute to a quick turnaround at the college level.

Scoggins made an oral commitment to New Mexico late Sunday after returning from his official visit, choosing the Lobos over scholarship offers from UNLV, New Mexico State and San Jose State.

Scoggins left New Mexico impressed with the school’s academics, campus life and new coach Bob Davie, who has been hired to resurrect a program that totaled three wins over the past three years.

Davie led Notre Dame to a 35-25 record and three bowl games from 1997 to 2001 before working in television.

“He just showed me how he was very successful at Notre Dame. He’s willing to play the best,” Scoggins said.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 315-pound Scoggins was a first-team all-state pick as a senior, helping Gorman (16-1) win its third straight state title.

“I’ll definitely bring physicality and can open holes for running backs,” Scoggins said.

Scoggins visited UNLV in December and said the Rebels were considered, but he enjoyed Albuquerque, N.M., too much to pass on the Lobos.

“Just getting to see Albuquerque for the first time, it reminds me of Las Vegas without the Strip,” Scoggins said. “On one side, there’s the city life, and on one side, the mountains. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Scoggins visited New Mexico with Gorman senior safety/linebacker Marc Philippi, who said in a text message he will make his announcement Wednesday.

Philippi also is considering UNLV, Navy and Montana, among others.

Palo Verde senior outside linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams said he is waiting to decide after visiting UNLV, and hopes to visit Hawaii soon. Garcia-Williams also has an offer from Southern Utah.
