BLAZER BASH: Ouzts’ two-run bunt lets Wildcats slip past Longhorns

There are plenty of ways to score two runs on one play in a baseball game, from the two-run single to the two-run homer.

Las Vegas High’s Daniel Ouzts pulled off the rare two-run sacrifice bunt Tuesday.

Ouzts’ squeeze bunt erased Legacy’s lead and gave the Wildcats a 4-3 home win in the Blazer SportCo Spring Bash.

Ouzts came on as a pinch-hitter with one out and the bases loaded. On a 2-1 count, Las Vegas started the runners and Ouzts bunted toward first, where it was fielded by Kyle Peeler.

Peeler tagged Ouzts out, and pinch-runner Dylan Awe scored from third easily. Right behind him, Erick Fedde never broke stride, coming around from second base to beat the return throw to the plate with the go-ahead run.

“Daniel Ouzts laid down a great bunt,” Las Vegas coach Sam Thomas said. “And Erick Fedde scoring from second, he never stopped. It was a great job on his part, baserunning.”

Legacy starter Brayden Torres rolled through the first four innings, allowing only a pair of singles. But Dillon Dove led off the fifth with an infield single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mac Lockett.

After a strikeout, Tanner Chauncey doubled home courtesy runner Charlie Shavers, and Chauncey came home on an error to cut Legacy’s lead to 3-2.

“I don’t think we competed real well in the beginning,” Thomas said. “We were sitting back and everybody was waiting for somebody to do something. That was a big hit by Tanner getting that double to get us on the board. I think that gave us some life.”

Jesse Acosta led off the bottom of the sixth with a sharp single to center. After Dustin Cash was retired popping up on a sacrifice attempt, Fedde came on as a pinch hitter and singled through the right side. Pinch-hitter Ryan Ashworth walked to load the bases and set things up for Ouzts.

“It’s important when your bench guys are in the game and you call on them and they perform,” Thomas said.

Dove went the distance, scattering six hits, to get the win for the Wildcats.

Legacy 7, Birmingham (Calif.) 2 — At Las Vegas, Ryan Calsada was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and four RBIs to lead the Longhorns past the Patriots.

Kyle Peeler went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Legacy.

Sierra Vista 3, San Fernando (Calif.) 1 — At Sierra Vista, Blair Goldsack hit a two-run home run to highlight a three-run fourth inning as the Mountain Lions beat the Tigers to move to 3-0 in the tournament.

Sierra Vista starter Dusty Stevens struck out five in six innings to earn the win, and Jake Hager fanned two of the five batters he faced in a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.

Palo Verde 2, Eldorado 0 — At Palo Verde, Spencer Suddeth pitched a seven-hit shutout with four strikeouts and no walks as the Panthers edged the Sundevils and improved to 3-0 in the tournament.

Eldorado’s Nelson Herrera threw a four-hitter with four strikeouts. Eric Larsen was 2-for-4 for the Sundevils.

Palo Verde 10, Poly (Calif.) 0 — At Palo Verde, Matt Hutchings threw a five-inning four-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk as the Panthers shut out the Parrots.

Jared Webb and Kevin DeSoto each went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for Palo Verde, and teammate Jordan Benson was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Centennial 6, Banning (Calif.) 2 — At Centennial, Ian Ogurek went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead the Bulldogs past the Pilots.

Casey Moses was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, and Austin Nelson went 3-for-4 for Centennial.

Bryan Bonnell went the distance, allowing one earned run on four hits, to pick up the win.

Cimarron-Memorial 10, Pahrump Valley 2 — At Cimarron, Kevin Dorantes hit a home run, scored twice and drove in five runs to help the Spartans defeat the Trojans and improve to 3-0 in the tournament.

A.J. Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs for Cimarron. Cody Stafford had two RBIs, and Cody Clark and Mark Kruthaupt each added two hits for the Spartans.

Tommy Eaton and Aukai Alameda each went 2-for-3 for Pahrump.

Pahrump Valley 5, Clark 3 — At Cimarron-Memorial, Joe McCaw’s two-run double keyed a five-run sixth inning as the Trojans rallied past the Chargers.

Alameda went 2-for-3 for Pahrump.

Mike Quiroz hit a two-run homer for Clark.

Liberty 10, Sylmar (Calif.) 1 — At Durango, Manuel Menocal went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Danny Topps was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs to lead the Patriots to an easy win over the Spartans.

Marcos Rivera went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Trevor Williams threw a five-hitter with five strikeouts to get the win.

Durango 12, Liberty 11 — At Durango, Will Morris hit a two-run double with no outs in the bottom of the sevent to give the Trailblazers the win over the Patriots.

Cameron Coombs was 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs, and Jacob Dismont went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three runs for Durango.

Rivera homered for Liberty.

Campbell Hall (Calif.) 10, Durango 1 — At Durango, Campbell Hall jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and rolled past the Trailblazers.

Dismont was 2-for-3 for Durango.

Coronado 10, Horizon (Calif.) 8 — At Coronado, Dillon Fahr was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Jordan Scott went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs to help the Cougars hold off the Panthers.

Tyler Brown went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Zane Korth was 2-for-4 with a double for Coronado.

Coronado 14, Carson (Calif.) 7 — At Sierra Vista, Miles Bice was 3-for-4 with two triples and four RBIs to help the Cougars past the Colts.

Winning pitcher Taylor Giordano was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jordan Kingsley went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Coronado.

Del Sol 11, Poly (Calif.) 7 — At Palo Verde, the Dragons scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 7-7 tie and slip past the Parrots.

Del Sol’s David Day went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, and also pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Luis Grullon and Diego Robles each had two hits for Del Sol.

Shadow Ridge 11, San Fernando (Calif.) 0 — At Sierra Vista, Brandon Show was 2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI to help the Mustangs cruise past the Tigers in five innings.

Winning pitcher Logan Hold tossed a three-hitter with three strikeouts, and also went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Josh Roelofs added two RBIs for Shadow Ridge.

Carson (Calif.) 6, Shadow Ridge 3 — At Sierra Vista, Tim Martin was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs to help the Colts rally past the Mustangs.

Bruce Butler was 2-for-3 for Shadow Ridge, which gave up four runs in the fifth inning after taking a 3-1 lead in the first.

Verdugo Hills (Calif.) 13, Spring Valley 1 — At Centennial, Josh Giannini threw a five-hitter with no walks and 10 strikeouts as the Dons easily downed the Grizzlies.

Jose Rosales-Rodarte was 1-for-2 with a double and a run for Spring Valley.

Spring Valley 11, Campbell Hall (Calif.) 1 — At Centennial, Anthony Novak tossed a six-inning one-hitter with three strikeouts to lead the Grizzlies past the Vikings.

Tyler Kartler went 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and three RBIs for Spring Valley, which led 10-1 after three innings.

Dylan Drachler was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two stolen bases for the Grizzlies, and teammates Kenny Hartlauer and Rosales-Rodarte each added two hits.

Garfield (Calif.) 15, Boulder City 11 — At Basic, the Bulldogs scored 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth on their way to a win over the Eagles.

Nick Morelli went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five runs for Boulder City, and Jack LaMarca was 2-for-2 with a home run, three runs and three RBIs. Aubrey Wrightsman had a pair of doubles for the Eagles.

Garfield (Calif.) 13, Western 2 — At Basic, the Bulldogs did all of their scoring in the first two innings and rolled past the Warriors.

Josh Yocum was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Western.

Western 5, Basic 1 — At Basic, Yocum tossed a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and three walks as the Warriors defeated the Wolves.

Yocum also went 2-for-4 that included a two-run double during Western’s five-run fifth inning.

Bonanza 15, Virgin Valley 7 — At Durango, Jake Zebe was 2-for-5 with five RBIs to help the Bengals to a win over the Bulldogs.

Joaquin Orozco was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Mike Hoyes went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Bonanza.

Eastlake (Calif.) 14, Bonanza 4 — At Durango, the Titans scored six runs in the second en route to the win.
