RECRUITING: Webinar provides pointers
Recruiting can be an extremely complicated process for high school athletes who have dreams of competing in college.
The Nevada Athletic Directors Association has stepped up to help students and families sift through the confusion and offer pointers on the often misunderstood process.
NADA is providing a free hourlong webinar with recruiting tips on its website at freerecruitingwebinar.squarespace.com/nada-form.
“One of the things that is most important is that they understand how important academics are,” said Larry Goins, president of NADA and athletic director at Desert Oasis. “They’re becoming more important all the time. The process starts in their freshman year.”
The narrator of the webinar is Dan Eassa, who has seen the recruiting process as a Division III football player, a coach and a sportscaster.
The webinar’s primary emphasis is on the importance of core courses for students to be eligible.
It also focuses on the number of opportunities that exist, the dangers of social networking and myths, such as that scholarships are “full rides” when they are actually renewable yearly.
RECENT DECISIONS — Several local seniors committed to NCAA programs.
Foothill boys soccer defender Andy Rodriguez chose UNLV.
In softball, Rancho pitcher Amber Marlett picked Southern Utah, and Coronado infielder Morgan Yuhas chose Northern Colorado.
In boys swimming, Green Valley’s Robert Hommel committed to Stanford, and Bonanza’s Sam Wieser chose Air Force.
Green Valley girls soccer forward Alyssa Rodriguez picked Cal State East Bay.
The Meadows girls volleyball setter Vanessa Hall committed to Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore.
