ROUNDUP: Arbor View routs Coronado in girls soccer

It took Arbor View’s girls soccer team more than an hour to squeeze a goal past Coronado’s defense the last time the two teams played.

The Aggies didn’t have to wait nearly as long in the rematch.

Tara LeBaron and Kayla White each had a goal and an assist to lead a balanced Arbor View attack, and the Aggies led from the third minute in a 6-1 home win Wednesday. Arbor View beat the Cougars 1-0 in the Southern Nevada final last season.

“We really respect Coronado. The two times we played them last year were really tough games,” Arbor View coach Jay Howard said. “We were really cautious, warning the girls that we were going to get (Coronado’s) best efforts.”

Lauren Shadel put the Aggies at ease early, taking a pass from Amberly Halstead three minutes into the game and burying a shot from the right corner of the penalty box that breezed underneath the crossbar.

Tori Rodriguez followed three minutes later, when her shot from 30 yards skipped into the goal. That score prompted Coronado goalkeeper Kaitlyn Fahrner, who played in last year’s title match, to come in off the bench with the Cougars trailing 2-0.

LeBaron dished a pass to Fallon Miller near midfield in the eighth minute, and Miller maneuvered through a swarm of Coronado defenders before beating the keeper to the left post for the 3-0 halftime margin.

LeBaron, a sophomore, then blitzed Coronado’s defense with four shots — including one that glanced off the right post in the 49th minute — before knocking down a pass from Tayler Alston midway through the second half and burying the ball in the back of the net.

The goal drew instant cries of “Finally!” from several of her teammates.

“During practices, I would always shank the ball and then finally score toward the end of the scrimmages we have,” LeBaron said of the response.

Arbor View outshot Coronado 18-8.

“Tara’s like that ... she’s just relentless and fearless,” Howard said of last year’s co-leading scorer. “She goes after everything and puts pressure on them. A lot of what she does is just pour pressure on the defense to cause turnovers.”

Arbor View goalkeeper Kyla Salazar made four saves to keep Coronado off the board before being replaced in the 70th minute.

Coronado’s Danielle Schumacher delivered a long shot five minutes before the end of the match for the Cougars’ goal.

But the Aggies responded with two more goals. White sent a cross that trickled through Fahrner’s fingertips, and Chandler Yoder redirected the ball home.

White then scored in the waning seconds on a pass from Halstead.

“We had to come out harder because we knew they were going to be on their 'A’ game,” LeBaron said. “They only lost by one in the finals.”

Green Valley 1, Palo Verde 1 — At Palo Verde, Sila Tuiofea scored with about five minutes to play to give the host Panthers a tie with the Gators.

Green Valley’s Cayla Imahara had scored five minutes earlier to give the Gators the lead.
