ROUNDUP: Goalkeepers get a little help as Coronado, Green Valley tie

Some girls soccer teams rely on a solid goalkeeper to stay afloat in games. For others, it’s a lucky bounce off the crossbar.
Host Coronado used both to pull out a 0-0 draw against Southeast League-leading Green Valley on Wednesday.
The teams combined for sixteen shots — nine on goal — in a game that featured two freshmen goalkeepers.
“It was a well-played game. Of course, we always wish we could finish,” Coronado coach Dana Neel said. “It seems like we hit the crossbar every time we play Green Valley, but they hit it, too, and I think we both came away pretty lucky on those.
“The team’s progressing. It’s definitely a stepping stone for us.”
The Cougars (8-1-3, 6-1-2 Southeast) nearly took the lead in the 75th minute when Melissa Subu fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar, with a little nudge from Green Valley keeper Nicole Westover, who finished with four saves.
The Gators (11-3-2, 8-0-1) responded three minutes later, when Cassidy McLean blasted a shot that Coronado keeper Kaitlyn Fahrner narrowly tipped at the bar. The ball caromed down toward the goal line, but barely stayed out. Fahrner made five saves.
“I thought we had plenty of shots to easily put that game away, we just didn’t,” Green Valley coach Joel Parks said. “(Coronado is) extremely aggressive; they go to the ball fantastic.”
