Broken water main leaves streaks on postseason picture
October 29, 2009 - 2:45 pm
The postseason girls volleyball picture is one plumbing hazard away from being finalized.
A broken water main at Bonanza on Thursday postponed the Bengals’ match against Sierra Vista until Monday. It’s the lone match left on the schedule with any playoff implications.
Both teams have already clinched a playoff spot, but Bonanza could still move up a spot if it knocks off the Mountain Lions.
Thursday’s action in the small school classes solidified that playoff schedule.
Here’s a breakdown of each class and each league.
Sunset Region
Southwest League
Southwest League
The seeds: Bishop Gorman (No. 1), Sierra Vista (No. 2), Bonanza and Pahrump Valley (Nos. 3 and 4).
Let’s start with the one league that isn’t done yet.
Bishop Gorman (16-0) went undefeated in league play and earned the No. 1 seed.
Sierra Vista’s only two league losses are to the Gaels. The Mountain Lions (13-2) are the No. 2 seed.
Pahrump is in the clubhouse at 11-5, one-half game ahead of the Bengals (10-5).
Should they end up tied at 11-5, Bonanza wins the tiebreaker on wins by beaten opponents, the second tiebreaker used by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association in two-team ties.
Because Bonanza would need to beat Sierra Vista to get into the tie and Sierra Vista has more wins than Durango (which is the team against which Pahrump has its extra win), Bonanza would get the nod for the No. 3 seed and Pahrump would own the No. 4 berth.
If Sierra Vista wins, Pahrump would be the No. 3 and Bonanza the No. 4.
Northwest League
The seeds: Palo Verde (No. 1), Centennial (No. 2), Faith Lutheran (No. 3), Shadow Ridge (No. 4).
There were no ties in this league, making this one easy to figure out.
Palo Verde (15-1) grabbed the No. 1 seed, one game ahead of Centennial (14-2).
Faith Lutheran (13-3) stayed in the race until the final week before settling for third.
Shadow Ridge (10-6) took the No. 4 seed.
Sunset Quarterfinal Matchups (Tuesday at 6 p.m.)
No. 4 SW Bonanza or Pahrump at No. 1 NW Palo Verde
No. 3 SW Bonanza or Pahrump at No. 2 NW Centennial
No. 3 NW Faith Lutheran at No. 2 SW Sierra Vista
No. 4 NW Shadow Ridge at No. 1 SW Gorman
Sunrise Region
Southeast League
Southeast League
The seeds: Silverado (No. 1), Green Valley (No. 2), Coronado (No. 3), Basic (No. 4).
Silverado (14-0) wrapped up the No. 1 seed with its win over Green Valley (12-2) on Wednesday, leaving the Gators with the No. 2 seed.
Coronado (10-4) is the No. 3 seed. Basic (6-8) held of Del Sol and Foothill for the fourth spot.
Northeast League
The seeds: Las Vegas (No. 1), Valley (No. 2), Rancho (No. 3), Eldorado (No. 4)
Las Vegas (14-0) ran the table in the Northeast en route to wrapping up the title.
Valley (12-2) lost its only two league matches to Las Vegas.
Rancho (9-5) secured the No. 3 seed, finishing one game ahead of Eldorado (8-6).
Sunrise Quarterfinal Matchups (Tuesday at 6 p.m.)
No. 4 SE Basic at No. 1 NE Las Vegas
No. 3 SE Coronado at No. 2 NE Valley
No. 3 NE Rancho at No. 2 SE Green Valley
No. 4 NE Eldorado at No. 1 SE Silverado
Class 3A
The seeds: Virgin Valley (No. 1), Boulder City (No. 2), Moapa Valley (No. 3)
Virgin Valley (4-0) earned the No. 1 seed by winning all four of its league matches.
Boulder City (2-2) swept Moapa Valley (0-4) to grab second place.
Moapa and Boulder City will meet in a semifinal match on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. at Moapa Valley.
That winner will play Virgin Valley that night at 7 p.m. for the tournament title.
Class 2A
The seeds: The Meadows (No. 1), Lincoln County (No. 2), White Pine (No. 3), Calvary Chapel (No. 4)
Technically, White Pine and The Meadows still have to play each other. Except, they really don’t need to play.
The Meadows (12-0) has already clinched the league title.
Lincoln County (11-3) will finish second.
White Pine is 8-4. The worst the Bobcats could finish would be 8-6 with two losses to The Meadows. They best they could do is 10-4, which isn’t good enough to catch Lincoln County.
Calvary Chapel and Needles both finished 8-6.
Even if White Pine were to fall into a three-way tie for third with Calvary and Needles, the Bobcats (who swept Calvary and split with Needles) would win the three-team tiebreaker on head-to-head results and still be the No. 3 seed.
No matter what happens, Calvary Chapel and Needles would then be in a two-way tie for fourth place. Calvary wins the tiebreaker on beaten opponents’ wins.
Both teams swept Agassi Prep, West Wendover and Mountain View and split with each other. Calvary’s extra win is against Lincoln County (11 wins). Needles’ is against White Pine (which can’t get any more than 10).
The tourney
On Nov. 7 at Desert Oasis, Calvary Chapel and The Meadows will meet in one semifinal. Lincoln County plays White Pine in the other. The two winners meet later in the day.
Class 1A
The seeds: Lake Mead (No. 1), Pahranagat Valley (No. 2), Tonopah (No. 3), Henderson International (No. 4), Lund (No. 5), Round Mountain (No. 6), Beatty (No. 7), Indian Springs (No. 8).
Lake Mead (9-0) won the outright title, finishing a game ahead of Pahranagat Valley (8-1).
Tonopah (6-3) stayed out of a potential messy tiebreaker by winning on Thursday.
Henderson International, Lund and Round Mountain each finished 5-4.
Henderson International, which beat Lund, 3-0, and lost to Round Mountain, 3-1, won the most games in the head-to-head meetings between the teams and grabbed the No. 4 seed.
That sent Lund and Round Mountain back to a two-team tie for fifth, which Lund wins because it swept the Knights in their lone meeting.
Beatty (4-5) is the No. 7 seed, followed by Indian Springs (2-7).
Quarterfinal matchups
At Desert Oasis on Nov. 6, the matchups will be: Indian Springs vs. Lake Mead; Beatty vs. Pahranagat Valley; Round Mountain vs. Tonopah; and Lund vs. Henderson International.
