Needles boys golf nets regular-season title; Lake Mead’s Velasquez named top player

The Needles (Calif.) boys golf team secured the regular-season Class 2A Southern League championship in the final standings, and Lake Mead’s Joey Velasquez took Player of the Year honors.
Needles averaged a 449.8, followed by The Meadows (494.3), Lake Mead (496.8) and Mountain View (524.5).
Velasquez averaged a 75.3.
All-league first-team honors went to Mountain View’s Dennis Bee (87 average), Needles’ Cullen Pottmeyer (88.3), Kenton Hartwick (88.5) and Shane East (89.8), and The Meadows’ Andrew Duddleston (91).
Second-team accolades went to The Meadows’ Dylan Lee (90.8), Needles’ Nolan Hartwick (91.3) and Kyle Parker (92), Lake Mead’s Tyler Hitchler (91.3) and Mountain View’s Andrew Heddleston (96.5).
Coach of the Year went to Needles’ Bill Darrow.
The 2A Southern League tournament is May 14 at Rivers Edge Golf Course in Needles, followed by the 2A state tournament May 19-20 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
The 2A Greater Nevada League all-league selections also were announced this week.
The first team includes Tonopah’s Denver Otteson, West Wendover’s Will Doudy and Bobby Graham, Round Mountain’s Clint Wilson, and Battle Mountain’s Matt Newguard, Jake Winters and Trevor Jones.
The second team features Wells’ Shaun Pearsons, Battle Mountain’s Tony Wallock, White Pine’s Brock Rowley and Jerdon Long, and Round Mountain’s Will Sweeney.
