Jessica Hsu is getting this play-in thing down pat.
For the second straight year, the Green Valley senior won a third-place play-in match to qualify for the Class 4A state girls singles championships.
Hsu beat Desert Oasis' Danica Ingwaldson, 6-1, 6-4 at the Darling Tennis Center on Monday.
The top two finishers in both the Sunset and Sunrise Regions earned automatic bids to the state meet. The third place-finishers in each region returned Monday to battle for the South's final spot in the state tourney. The state meet begins with the team competition Thursday in Carson City. Singles and doubles play begins Friday and wraps up Saturday
Bishop Gorman's Andrew Raphaelson earned the last spot in boys singles. Bonanza's Laurent Gontier and Sean Lettero took the boys doubles spot, and Gorman's Allie Beckett and Blair Bigelow advanced in girls doubles.
Last year, Hsu downed Legacy's Breanna Watkins to qualify for the state meet, where she won a quarterfinal match and finished fourth.
Raphaelson had the most taxing day of all of Monday's winners, nipping Coronado's Matt Gapultos, 6-4, 6-4.
In boys doubles, Gontier and Lettero made short work of Coronado's Jakob Knopp and Elliott King, winning, 6-0, 6-1.
Beckett and Bigelow advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Green Valley's Daniel Efargan and Sarah Trigero.
