RECRUITING: Foothill offensive tackle Broyles commits to Boise State

Staying close to home never was something Jake Broyles planned for.

So after an official visit to Boise State last weekend, the Foothill senior offensive tackle gave an oral commitment late Sunday night to the Broncos.

“I was looking for a complete 180 from Vegas and a place that was really psyched on football,” Broyles said. “The weather was different, the people were just crazy about football, unlike here.

“It was a small-town feel but a big city. Just everything about it was what I was looking for.”

The 6-foot-6-inch, 250-pound Broyles had planned to visit Fresno State from Jan. 9 to 11.

But after knowing what he wanted to do and running it by his father late Sunday night, Broyles ended the suspense.

“My dad actually got mad at me for not saying 'yes’ on the spot,” Broyles said. “To be able to play for a nationally ranked top-10 team and on that blue field, it’s so cool.

“Everything about it, I can’t even explain how excited I am.”

Broyles, who played right tackle this season for the Falcons (4-7), said Boise State wants him to continue playing tackle rather than switching to guard.

Foothill coach Marty Redmond wasn’t sure whether Broyles is a better run or pass blocker.

“He does both pretty well,” Redmond said. “Not only is he a big kid, but he can move his feet pretty well.”

The first day Broyles can sign is Feb. 4.
