Basic tops Boulder City to capture boys title

Basic boys basketball coach Steven Bentz doesn’t mind the label “second-quarter team.”

That is, as long as the Wolves continue to finish games like they did Saturday night.

One day after outscoring Virgin Valley by nine points in the second quarter, Basic outscored Boulder City by 11 in the second on its way to a 58-43 win in the title game of the ninth annual Lake Mead Holiday Classic.

“Hopefully we can keep it more balanced and be a four-quarter team, but runs and good quarters definitely do help,” Bentz said.

Basic (5-1) opened the second quarter Saturday on a 12-2 run keyed by Tyler Dobbins, who scored eight points in the period.

Dobbins, a junior point guard, finished with 12 points, nine assists and seven steals.

“It’s a pretty good kick start to our season,” Dobbins said.

James Holmes (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Mike Feher (seven points) were named to the all-tournament team for the Wolves.

Basic junior forward Nick Sangchaloay was held to four points but was named tournament Most Valuable Player after averaging 14 points per game in the Wolves’ first four games.

“Nick and Tyler, they’re both pretty much our playmakers,” Bentz said. “They get the ball to the open guys. When the offense breaks down, Nick is great at taking it to the basket, and Tyler’s great at knocking down shots.”

As the lone Class 4A school in the 12-team tournament, Basic’s average margin of victory was 16.8 points per game.

It’s exactly the kind of momentum Bentz hopes can boost the Wolves, who are coming off a 6-20 season.

“It gives us momentum, morale and everybody’s excited and happier to go to practice and work to get better,” he said.

With 11 points, Joey Western was the only double-figure scorer for Boulder City (5-1).

Even after outscoring the Wolves 13-9 in the third quarter, the Eagles still trailed 42-33 entering the fourth.

“Obviously, that was a big run,” Boulder City coach Bobby Reese said of Basic’s second period. “We were flat, and they had a lot of energy.

“We could just never get out of that big hole we dug ourselves into.”

The physical game saw the two teams combine for 23 fouls, including two technicals and one intentional.

Western and Alex Dillon (eight points) were named to the all-tournament team for Boulder City.

The all-tourney team was rounded out by Lake Mead’s De’Quan Thompson, Henderson International’s Josh Young, Virgin Valley’s Zach Horlacher, The Meadows’ Austin Brown and Lincoln County’s Dantley Walker.

In other games:

Lake Mead 61, Henderson International 48 — The Eagles closed the third-place game on a 9-0 run and wound up winning the fourth quarter 17-8.

Thompson scored 16 points to lead Lake Mead, which got 12 from Jeffrey Newton and 10 each from Demetrius Turner and Cameron Cornish.

Danny Moerman paced Henderson International with 18 points. Jay Sutorius added 11 and Clay Tormey 10 for the Wolverines.

Ten of Henderson International’s 14 field goals were 3-pointers.

Virgin Valley 75, The Meadows 68 — The Meadows pulled within 65-62 with 41.3 seconds remaining before the Bulldogs finished on a 10-6 run.

Horlacher had six points and 16 rebounds to lead Virgin Valley, which outscored The Meadows 12-5 in the third quarter.

Terran Leavitt had 17 points, Jason Wittwer 14 points and Austin Cloes 13 points and six assists for the Bulldogs.

Virgin Valley had eight steals.

Mike Wallace scored 21 points for The Meadows, which also got 16 from Garrett Gosse and 11 from Brett Leibowitz.

Lincoln County 62, Spring Mountain 38 — Walker and Eric Rippetoe scored 15 points each to lead the Lynx to the win.

Trent Tibbitts scored 12 points for Lincoln County, which outscored Spring Mountain 30-15 in the second and third quarters.

Davorite Sandifer paced Spring Mountain with 14 points.

Trinity 54, Calvary Chapel 47 — Budweiser Hawkins poured in 30 points to lead the Thunder to the win.

Nate Klegseth added 16 for Trinity, which overcame 17-for-28 free-throw shooting.

Justin Cox had 12 points for the Lions, who were only 7-for-22 at the foul line.

Indian Springs 49, Calvary (Calif.) 32 — Junior Baker scored a game-high 30 points to lift the Thunderbirds to the win.
