ROUNDUP: Russell has big game, but Needles falls in title tilt

Darra Russell scored 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds Saturday night, but Yuma (Ariz.) Cathoilc used a 19-10 third-quarter run to defeat Needles, 52-45 in the championship game of the Williams (Ariz.) Tournament.

Stevie Kidd had 11 points for Needles, which led 26-20 at the half.

Russell has had double-figure totals in points and rebounds in each of Needles’ last four games.

Needles 66, Williams (Ariz.) 51 — At the Williams (Ariz.) Tournament, Russell had 27 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists to lead Needles into the title game.

Kidd added 23 points and seven rebounds for Needles.

Cherry Creek (Colo.) 48, Bishop Gorman 39 — At Gorman, Ian Gammie scored 16 points to help Cherry Creek overcome a 28-20 deficit in the third quarter and rally to beat the Gaels.

John Loyd led Gorman with 16 points, but foul trouble hurt the Gaels down the stretch. Cherry Creek finished the game on a 28-11 run.

Austin Wilbers added 11 points for Cherry Creek.

Dixie (Utah) 78, Cimarron-Memorial 65 — At Dixie, Utah, the host school hit 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter and overcame a 38-31 halftime deficit to beat Cimarron.

Kevin Olekaibe led the Spartans with 20 points. Brayden Quackenbush added 14 points.

Orange Lutheran (Calif.) 67, Faith Lutheran 62 — At Orange, Calif., the Crusaders couldn’t recover after being outscored 19-10 in the third quarter.

Chase Saunders scored 21 points to lead Faith Lutheran, which also got 16 from Brett Lubbe and 11 from Taylor Jantz.

Pahranagat Valley 49, Virginia City 41 — At Hawthorne, Taylor Poulsen had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Tommy Williams added 13 points to lead the Panthers.

Pahranagat Valley 59, White Pine 49  — At Hawthorne, the Panthers outscored the Bobcats 15-5 in overtime on their way to the win.

Williams had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Poulsen added 14 points and 13 rebounds.
