ROUNDUP: Centennial, Gorman girls win tournament openers

Deanna Daniels scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds Thursday as Centennial’s girls basketball team won its opening game in the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, downing Marlborough (Calif.), 66-58.

Daniels, a 5-foot-10-inch senior, also shined on defense, holding 6-3 Talia Caldwell, a University of California recruit, to eight points.

Johnna Brown added 17 points and Courtney Hayes 16 for Centennial, which took a 31-25 halftime lead after trailing 17-12 after the first quarter.

Bishop Gorman 57, Edison (Calif.) 53 — At the Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Aaryn Ellenberg scored 30 points to help the Gaels nip Edison.

Dannielle Diamant added 11 points for Gorman.

BOYS

Centennial 49, Cedar City (Utah) 42 — At Cedar City, Utah, Beau Scarlett scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, who used a 17-5 third-quarter run to down Cedar City.

Matt Holley added 10 points for Centennial.

Joel Einfeldt led Cedar City with 14 points.

Canyon Springs 52, Cherry Creek (Colo.) 32 — At the Cherry Creek Classic in Englewood, Colo., Michael Thompson scored 13 points for the Pioneers, who held the host school to 13 second-half points en route to the win.

Terence Stanley added 11 points for Canyon Springs, which outscored Cherry Creek 32-15 in the middle two quarters and played at deliberate pace in the fourth quarter, outscoring Cherry Creek 6-3 in the final eight minutes.

The top four Class 5A boys basketball teams — Coronado, Liberty, Bishop Gorman and Arbor View — will play for the state title Thursday and Friday at the Thomas & Mack Center.
