Phillips’ condition upgraded following successful surgery

A Green Valley High School football player successfully underwent surgery Sunday to alleviate swelling in his vertebrae caused by an injury suffered Friday.

LaQuan Phillips, 17, was upgraded from serious condition to fair at Sunrise Hospital on Sunday, hospital spokesperson Ashlee Seymour said.

“From everything that I could gather, it went about as well as could be expected,” Green Valley coach Matt Gerber said.

Phillips, a senior defensive back, was injured after an apparent collision with 7:25 remaining in the second quarter of Green Valley’s 24-20 home loss to Centennial on Friday.
