Legacy headed in right direction after rallying past Centennial

Legacy head coach Dave Snyder knew it was time for his Longhorn team to make a move in the Northwest League.

After Friday’s performance against No. 8 Centennial, Snyder feels pretty good about the direction his squad is heading.

The No. 10 Longhorns scored 33 unanswered points and got a pair of touchdowns from Prince Oroke in a 33-14 home victory.

Centennial quarterback Chris Henderson engineered touchdown drives on the first two possessions. But the Longhorns held the Bulldogs to 48 yards the rest of the game.

“I told them after the second Centennial touchdown that it was time to become men,” said Snyder. “We have been boys in this division for too long and it was time we made a stand. We were shocked at Centennial’s size and I think that got to us in the early going.”

Legacy (4-0, 1-0 Northwest) got things going in the second period, thanks Deshae Edwards. Edwards set up Legacy’s first score with a 39-yard interception return, then threw a 37-yard pass to Demetrus Hughes to cut the deficit to 14-7.

It was all Longhorns in the second half, as Legacy outgained Centennial (2-2, 0-1), 199-32.

On the first possession of the third quarter, the Longhorns marched 84 yards in 10 plays with quarterback Zach Monticelli going in from the 1 to make the score 14-14.

Oroke, who gained 121 of his game-high 144 yards in the second half, put Legacy ahead for good with an 8-yard run early in the fourth quarter. The Longhorns pulled away on a 26-yard interception return by Evan Blanner and a 31-yard run by Oroke.

Edwards, the area’s top rusher heading into the game, gained 80 yards on 20 carries for Legacy, which outgained Centennial on the ground, 225-76.

“It feels good to be 4-0,” said Snyder. “We still have plenty of football left, but it’s good to do some of the whipping. We have taken our lumps for a long time, and it’s a good feeling to be able to return the favor.”
