Katie Carrell had time to get a sip of water and watch the rest of the field finish Saturday at Mountain View Park.
But the Arbor View junior saw a few too many Shadow Ridge runners headed her way.
Carrell won the individual title in the large school race of the Laughlin Invitational, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 32 seconds.
Shadow Ridge took the team crown, placing four runners in the top nine and finishing with 34 points. Arbor View was second with 49 points.
The Mustangs' Michelle Schenck was second in 21:08, 36 seconds behind Carrell. Palolo Prince (fourth in 21:46), Ashley Graf (eighth in 22:13) and Mallory Reese (ninth in 22:19) helped Shadow Ridge sew up the team title.
In the small school race, Laughlin had three runners finish in the top five and five in the top nine to defeat Faith Lutheran, which had the only other complete team.
Laughlin scored 22 points, 15 fewer than Faith Lutheran.
The Crusaders' Keely Bakken won the race in 20:58. Laughlin's Jessica Gnadt was second in 22:24.
