Hartle, Centennial boys top Laughlin field

Nick Hartle spent Saturday morning showing some older runners how to win a race.

The Centennial freshman held off Shadow Ridge's Sam Mahar to win the Laughlin Invitational at Mountain View Park. His first-place finish helped the Bulldogs capture the team title.

Centennial had a score of 68 to win the 12-team large school event. Shadow Ridge was second with 86, followed by Tech with 96.

Hartle won the 3.1-mile race in 17 minutes, 21 seconds. Mahar finished two seconds behind. Travis Carter, part of an Australian select team, finished third in 17:24.

Hartle was the only freshman among the 16 finishers in the race, but was one of four Centennial runners in the top 16.

In the small school race, Boulder City had two of the top four placers, but Faith Lutheran's depth was just enough to win.

Both teams had a score of 58. The Crusaders won the team title based on the sixth-runner finish. Faith Lutheran's sixth-best runner placed 18; Boulder City's was 38th.

The Eagles' Matt Lundgren won the race in 17:26, 13 seconds faster than Moapa Valley's Josh Thompson. Boulder City's Taylor Clifford was fourth in 18:21.

Faith Lutheran placed five runners in the top 16.
