1 held, 1 hospitalized after officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas

Updated January 2, 2020 - 3:09 pm

A gunman was shot at by Las Vegas police officers Thursday morning after he allegedly wounded a maintenance worker at an apartment complex in the west valley, police said.

A woman working in the office of the Vista del Valle apartments on the 4100 block of W Viking Road, near South Valley View Boulevard, called police around 9:10 a.m. to report that “an irate resident” was confronting a maintenance worker in the office. While she was on the phone, the man shot at the maintenance worker, according to Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Nichole Splinter.

Las Vegas police officers arriving at the scene heard the shots as well and fired one shot at the man with the gun, who was a resident of the complex. The bullet did not strike the man, who was taken to University Medical Center and arrested, Splinter said.

The maintenance worker was brought to UMC Trauma with multiple gunshot wounds and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.

Residents who live in the area said they were saddened but not surprised by the violence in their neighborhood.

“I was heading out to my truck to go into town to do business and I see police tape everywhere … police cars as far as the eye can see,” said Thomas Larkin, who lives nearby, adding, “I wouldn’t walk around here at night and I’m a big boy.”

“You see sketchy people around here all the time,” agreed George Stasny, another nearby resident. “You don’t want to walk outside after dark. You don’t know what is going to happen.”

The identity of the officer is expected to be released Saturday morning, per Metro protocol. Anyone with information is encouraged to call LVMPD Force Investigation Team at 702-828-8452.
