Las Vegas middle school student arrested in assault on teacher

Updated April 20, 2022 - 8:23 pm

A student at Sawyer Middle School in Las Vegas was arrested Wednesday after threatening a teacher with scissors, police said.

Assistant principal Hallie Loewy told parents in an email that Clark County School District police officers responded to the school and “handled the situation within minutes.” No one was injured, she said.

“As it has been communicated multiple times, the Clark County School District is actively pursuing any and all legal actions against students who engage in violence and violate the CCSD Student Code of Conduct,” she wrote.

A 15-year-old eighth grade student grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened staff members, Clark County School District Police Department Lt. Bryan Zink said. It was unclear why the student had threatened the staff members or if specific people were targeted.

She faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and threats to staff, Zink said.

It was one of three instances of school violence on Wednesday, after a student at Foothill High School student was arrested following an assault on a teacher and a Palo Verde High School student was arrested after allegedly shoving a teacher.

The assaults come after students, teachers and support employees in the district rallied on Tuesday at Eldorado High School for more accountability from the district about safety protocols they say were not implemented as the school returned for its first day of classes after spring break following the assault of an Eldorado teacher this month.

Last week, in response to the Eldorado attack, the school district announced new protocols and safety measures that included increased police presence in and around district schools and new panic buttons for teachers and staff to reach leadership and first responders from their location.
