Summerlin student arrested after assaulting teacher, police say

Updated April 20, 2022 - 7:44 pm

A Palo Verde High School student was arrested Wednesday after assaulting a teacher, Clark County School District Police Department Lt. Bryan Zink said.

The 17-year-old boy entered a classroom he wasn’t supposed to be in, Zink said, and the teacher asked him to leave. After an argument, he shoved the teacher “several times” before leaving the campus.

The teacher called for help and the student was arrested later, Zink said. He faces a charge of battery on a school district employee.

Assistant principal Lisa Schumacher relayed the information to parents in an email.

“As it has been communicated multiple times, the Clark County School District is actively pursuing any and all legal actions against students who engage in violence and violate the CCSD Student Code of Conduct,” she said. “I am asking once again that parents and guardians talk to their students about the ramifications of breaking the Student Code of Conduct.”

The assualt was one of three reported Wednesday throughout the valley. A student at Sawyer Middle School was arrested after she waved a pair of scissors at staff members, while a student at Foothill High School was arrested after she produced a knife while exiting a classroom, Zink said.

This comes just a day after after students, teachers and support employees in the Clark County School District rallied on Tuesday at Eldorado High School for more accountability from the district about safety protocols they say were not implemented as the school returned for its first day of classes following the violent assault of an Eldorado teacher earlier this month.

Last week, in response to the Eldorado attack, the school district announced new protocols and safety measures that included increased police presence in and around district schools and new panic buttons for teachers and staff to reach leadership and first responders from their location.
