Spurs assistant will be first female head coach in Las Vegas Summer League

Basketball Hall of Famer Ann Meyers is the only woman ever to sign a free-agent contract with an NBA team, the Indiana Pacers, in 1979.

Thirty-six years later, Becky Hammon will make some NBA history of her own in Las Vegas where she’ll be the first female head coach in summer league history.

Hammon will coach the San Antonio Spurs’ summer league team, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Natalie Nakase served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers last year.

Hammon already became the first female full-time assistant coach in NBA history when she joined the Spurs before the 2014-15 season. The six-time WNBA All-Star point guard joined San Antonio after retiring from the WNBA following a 16-year career.

The Spurs start play in the Las Vegas Summer League on July 11 against the New York Knicks.
