Line, total drop on 49ers-Jets ‘MNF’ game after star RB ruled out
The 49ers dropped from consensus 4-point favorites to 3½-point favorites over the Jets on “Monday Night Football” less than 90 minutes before kickoff after running back Christian McCaffrey was ruled out with a calf injury.
San Francisco is down to a 3-point favorite (-120) at Station Sports, where the total also dropped from 42½ to 41½. The total is still at 43 at the Westgate SuperBook, Circa Sports and Caesars Sportsbook.
The Super Bowl loser is on a 4-20 slide against the spread in Week 1 since 2000.
Despite that trend, the betting public is all over San Francisco seven months after it lost 25-22 in overtime to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas. The 49ers accounted for 69 percent of tickets against the spread at Station Sports and 65 percent of money line wagers, while 64 percent of tickets on the total are on the over.
“We’re going to be huge Jets fans,” Red Rock Resort sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said.
There has been quite a bit of movement on this game since the line opened in May. The 49ers were as high as 6-point favorites before the line dropped with offensive tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk holding out and McCaffrey hurt.
“It just kept dropping and dropping,” SuperBook oddsmaker Ed Salmons said. “Then we saw McCaffrey practicing and Trent Williams signed, so we moved it to 4.”
New York quarterback Aaron Rodgers, 40, returns after tearing his Achilles tendon four snaps into last season.
“I’m looking forward to see what Rodgers actually looks like. Hopefully he’ll make it through the game and be healthy,” Salmons said. “The Jets have a good defense. Now it’s up to their offense.”
