Raiders report: Aidan O’Connell, Maxx Crosby miss practice again

Updated December 13, 2024 - 5:04 pm

Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell missed a second straight day of practice Friday as he continues to deal with a knee injury.

Defensive end Maxx Crosby also sat again Friday. He has been dealing with an ankle injury much of the season and managing reps in practice, but hasn’t been listed on the injury report in recent weeks.

Further clarity should come Saturday on Crosby and O’Connell, who avoided a serious injury despite being carted off the field in Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers. His status for Monday’s game against the Falcons is uncertain.

“He’s getting better,” coach Antonio Pierce said. “He’s fighting his tail off with our trainers and coming along. … If he has an opportunity to play, he will.”

Pierce said getting an extra day to prepare “really helps us this week.” Backup quarterback Desmond Ridder would start against his former team if O’Connell can’t play.

The Raiders are waiting to see if O’Connell can move around well enough to protect himself. They also must decide whether he’s at risk of further injury if he plays.

“You don’t want to put a player out there who is hurt, and now he becomes injured and it’s something that’s long term,” Pierce said. “Knock on wood, we avoided that Sunday.

“And the way our season has gone, all our quarterbacks have to be ready to go.”

Undrafted rookie quarterback Carter Bradley was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster this week.

In other injury news, Sam Webb (back) missed another practice. Defensive tackle Adam Butler (concussion) was upgraded to limited participation.

Hobbs could return

Cornerback Nate Hobbs, who has missed the past four games with an ankle injury, practiced in a limited capacity Thursday and Friday and is on track to make his return Monday.

“He’s trending in a really good direction,” Pierce said. “He’s done really good (at practice), very fluid. We’ll see how he comes out (of Friday’s practice), but I’d anticipate him playing, starting and giving us that boost we really need in the secondary.”

Hobbs said it has been difficult watching the past four games, especially as the team continued to lose.

“I just want to be out there with my brothers and go out and ball — win, lose or draw,” he said.

Hobbs said he was proud of the young players who have been seeing extended reps in the secondary with he and fellow starting cornerback Jakorian Bennett out of the lineup.

Staying safe

The NFL has issued a security alert to team security officials and players after a series of robberies at the homes of players, particularly during times they are known to be playing in games.

NFL Media reported the FBI believes the culprits are part of a crime ring that uses public records to find addresses and then conducts extensive surveillance before striking. NBA players reportedly have been targeted, too.

Pierce said he believes most in the organization are already fairly vigilant about security.

“I think just living in Vegas alone, you understand that you’ve got to be kind of smart with everything,” he said. “We just saw that interview there with Joe Burrow, and you can see how upset he was. I think everybody around the league understands that when you’re a target and have the cameras or bright lights in front of you, we’re an easy target. And obviously we know where we’re playing, so I’m sure guys will take extra caution there.”

Status quo on Snowden

Defensive end Charles Snowden continues to practice with the team despite being charged with DUI this week.

It is unknown whether the team will discipline Snowden.

“We handled it internally,” Pierce said. “After that, it’s up to the league and legal.”
