Here are the nominations for the SAG Awards
December 10, 2014 - 10:28 am
LOS ANGELES — Michael Keaton’s quirky dark comedy “Birdman” led the way with four Screen Actors Guild nominations, followed by “Boyhood,” “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything” with three each and “Foxcatcher” with a pair.
“Birdman” snagged nominations for Keaton for lead actor, Edward Norton for supporting actor, Emma Stone for supporting actress and for the ensemble cast.
Besides “Birdman,” the other ensemble nominations went to “Boyhood,” “Grand Budapest Hotel,” “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything.” Benedict Cumberbatch scored three nominations, with nods for lead actor in “The Imitation Game” and “Sherlock: His Last Vow,” and as part of the ensemble for “The Imitation Game.”
The cast nom for “Budapest Hotel” was its only nomination Nine other titles received single nominations — “Gone Girl,” “The Judge,” “Cake,” “Still Alice,” Into the Woods,” “Wild,” “The Judge,” “Nightcrawler” and “St. Vincent” — while “American Sniper,” “The Homesman,” “Interstellar,” “Mr. Turner,” “Selma” and “A Most Violent Year” were shut out.
The biggest surprise may have been Jennifer Aniston’s nomination for her work as a deeply depressed woman in “Cake.” It’s her first SAG nod for movie work.
Meryl Streep received her record 16th SAG nomination for “Into the Woods.” She’s won once for “Doubt.”
On the TV side, “Modern Family” emerged with four nominations for comedy series, Julie Bowen for female actor in a comedy series and Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet for male actor in a comedy series.”Modern Family” has won the series trophy for four straight years and Burrell picked up the individual SAG award last January, blocking Alec Baldwin from winning an eighth straight trophy for “30 Rock.”
“Modern Family” was followed by “Boardwalk Empire,” “Game of Thrones,” “Homeland” and “House of Cards” with three nominations apiece.
Nominations were selected by a panel of 2,100 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members for films and another 2,100 members for the TV noms.
The four nominations will help solidify the status of “Birdman” as an awards-season frontrunner. It won best film at the Gotham Awards and scored a leading six nominations for the Spirit Awards.
The SAG nominations are closely watched by awards trackers since actors represent about 20% of the voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
About 80% of SAG winners in the individual acting categories have gone on to win Oscars. The last four Oscar winners — Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for “Dallas Buyers Club,” Cate Blanchett for “Blue Jasmine” and Lupita Nyong’o for “12 Years a Slave” — had all won SAG trophies a few weeks earlier.
Winners of the SAG ensemble trophy are far less likely to win the Best Picture Oscar, matching only nine times in 19 years. The “American Hustle” cast won the SAG award last January and then was shut out at the Oscars.
Besides Cumberbatch, four others scored nominations for both feature film and TV - Adrien Brody (“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Houdini”), Charles Dance (“The Imitation Game,” “Game of Thrones”), Allen Leech (“The Imitation Game,” “Downton Abbey”) and Mark Ruffalo (“Foxcatcher,” “The Normal Heart”).
Ansel Elgort and Eva Longoria made the announcements Wednesday morning at the Pacific Design Center.
The winners will be announced in ceremonies at the Shrine Auditorium on Jan. 25 following voting by the 165,000 members of SAG-AFTRA. The telecast will be live on TNT and TBS.
