Taste of the Town: Buckwheat pancake mix
November 5, 2014 - 4:11 pm
Buckwheat pancakes have a taste and texture like no other, which is undoubtedly why Rich Kohut is looking for the mix to whip them up at home. And readers have found local sources for it.
Blake Myers reported finding it in the bulk-food section at WinCo at 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson; there’s another WinCo at 6101 N. Decatur Blvd. Dorothy Dawson found buckwheat pancake and waffle mix at Whole Foods Market, which has four stores in the valley. And Tom Reichel, who has given up on finding the Aunt Jemima Buckwheat Pancake Mix he’d used for decades (and which appears to have been discontinued) found Arrowhead Mills Organic Buckwheat Pancake and Waffle Mix at either Vons or Whole Foods Market. …
For Alan Van Ees, who emailed in search of Drake’s Cakes, adding that he was “dying for a (stale) Devil Dog,” five readers reported spotting them at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. Responses came from Roberta Shulman, Pat Fautt, Ann Brown, Ed Bordenka and James Nevill, with Nevill adding, “And I bet they’re not stale.” Fautt suggested calling ahead because they’re not always in stock (and adding, “They freeze wonderfully”). Bordenka added, “Maybe you should write a whole piece on Glazier’s for all the newer East Coast transplants.” …
For Ishbel and Edward Rosten, who are looking for Polly-O ricotta, Robert Mayer and Steve Castle found it at Smith’s stores at 2211 N. Rampart Blvd. and 7130 N. Durango Drive, and Jennifer Esposito found it at — wait for it — Glazier’s. …
For Keri Dilts, who’s looking for a local source for Grandma Sycamore’s bread, Shelli Clark emailed that it was being sampled recently at Costco at 791 Marks St. in Henderson and she was told it was a new item there, adding, “Yay! I’ve loved that bread for years!” …
More on 100 percent Romano cheese: Pat Morella wrote to report finding freshly grated Locatelli Pecorino Romano at Vons. …
More on KFC-style coleslaw: Marsha Ketaner emailed that using Marzetti’s slaw dressing is the best way to get the right flavor.
