Scoggins expected to return to UNLV

UNLV lost two starting offensive linemen during the offseason, but now the Rebels probably are getting one back.

Junior Ron Scoggins, who started 19 games at guard the past two football seasons, is expected to return next week.

He was seen leaving Lied Athletic Complex on Friday.

“We’re hoping everything comes together with academics and his own decision on what he wants to do and his teammates,” coach Bobby Hauck said. “Hopefully, we’ll have him back out there.”

UNLV, which comes off its first winning season and bowl appearance in 13 years, opens training camp at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Rebel Park. The Rebels move practice north to Ely on Aug. 10, and open their season Aug. 29 at Arizona.

Scoggins’ expected return is a boost to what already should be a strong offensive line, even with the loss of Cameron Jefferson, who transferred to Arkansas on May 31.

The Rebels, if Scoggins comes back, return four starters. That includes left tackle Brett Boyko and center Robert Waterman, who were named to the All-Mountain West preseason team.

Scoggins, who went to Bishop Gorman High School, left the team in the spring, deciding he didn’t want to play anymore.

Which guard position he would play remains to be seen. He started 10 games on the left side two years and the final nine at right guard last season.
