New VA chief to speak in Las Vegas

Newly confirmed Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald will attend Saturday’s Disabled American Veterans national convention at Bally’s Las Vegas and make his first address to the veterans service community.

McDonald, 61, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 29 to replace Acting Secretary Sloan Gibson, who had filled in at the VA’s top post since late May when President Barack Obama accepted Erik Shinseki’s resignation.

Shinseki, a retired Army general, resigned as VA secretary amid mounting complaints by veterans of long wait times for health care and scandals alleged by whistleblowers of VA staffers reporting false wait times to headquarters in order to receive bonuses.
