Runaway horse-drawn carriage crashes into vehicles, injures operator

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Police say a horse carriage operator was hurt and five passengers from New York escaped injury when the horse pulling their carriage got startled and crashed into five vehicles in downtown Savannah.

Savannah Chatham Metropolitan police say the carriage was carrying two women and three children from Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., Monday morning when the horse pulling the coach began running.

Department spokesman Julian Miller says the incident spanned six city blocks and nearby restaurant employees eventually calmed downed the horse with carrots.

The 37-year-old carriage operator was ejected from the coach. Authorities say she was taken to Memorial University Medical Center, the extent of her injuries wasn’t immediately clear. Police say the horse wasn’t injured.

Authorities say the incident is under investigation.
