Taste of the Town: Readers find liver and onions

Ha!

Oh, sorry; that was directed at one of our R-J copy editors.

Last week, on the night before my column appeared with a request from Tom Richards for “a decent plate of liver and onions for about $10,” said copy editor approached my desk with a comment that was along the lines of, “Liver and onions? Really?”

And so I found myself defending it, pointing out that a lot of people still like this classic dish that, if prepared carefully — which generally means not cooked to oblivion — and especially if made with calves’ liver, can be quite delectable (although I had my doubts about the $10 part).

Well, once again, Taste of the Town readers came through not only to vindicate but also surprise me. Six readers responded to recommend six restaurants, and most of them said their suggestions came at least close to the price target.

Ruth Jagodzinski emailed that it’s always on the menu for about $10 or less at Blueberry Hill Family Restaurants, which has four locations in the valley. Catherine A. Orcutt emailed that she and her mother, Joan M. Galtieri, find the liver and onions (with potato and vegetable) at Snaps Restaurant at the Eastside Cannery, 5255 Boulder Highway, “excellent … moist and tender.” Claude Black said the liver and onions, served with a salad, at The Promenade Cafe at the Rampart Casino, 221 N. Rampart Blvd., is a “great buy.” Donna Carbone said she and her husband like to get the dish at the Harvest Cafe at 4835 W. Craig Road, adding that the cafe usually has a coupon in the paper for buy-one, get-one with two beverage purchases. Martha Diamond recommended the liver and onions served at the Cafe Cortez at the El Cortez, 600 Fremont St. And Charles Goodwin said it’s on the menu daily at the Willows Restaurant at Sun City MacDonald Ranch at 2020 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway in Henderson, adding that the Wednesday special of $13.99 includes soup and dessert. …

For Steven Smith, N. Baranowski reported finding Trader Vic’s Hot Buttered Rum Mix, as well as another brand, at The Liquor Outlet at 1725 E. Warm Springs Road. …

And for Bill Eller, who’s looking for local sources for British foods and sweets, Angelica Orme recommended the International Marketplace at 5000 S. Decatur Blvd. and Cost Plus World Market, which has locations at 2151 N. Rainbow Blvd. and 3890 Blue Diamond Road.
