Small Plates: The Commissary Latin Kitchen

THE COMMISSARY LATIN KITCHEN, DOWNTOWN GRAND, 206 N. THIRD ST.

The Commissary, which opened late last month, is on the first floor of the Downtown Grand’s West Tower, just across Third Street from the casino. It’s from chef Richard Sandoval, a Mexico City native who attended the Culinary Institute of America, formerly had Isla at Treasure Island and currently has 37 restaurants in seven states as well as Washington, D.C., Mexico, Dubai, Qatar and Serbia. The Commissary, which is decorated with reclaimed wood and has a 140-seat patio, serves Latin-inspired sandwiches, salads, soups, spice-rubbed rotisserie chicken, 12-hour smoked brisket, tacos, burritos, burgers and milkshakes. Its Lavazza Coffee Cafe serves coffee drinks, pastries, crepes, breakfast sandwiches and gelato. Here’s a sample of the menu:

Tortas: Mexican grilled cheese, $8; Baja fish, $11; Cubano, $12; crispy chicken Milanese, $10.

Soups and salads: Tortilla soup, $6; Caesar salad, $7; Cobb salad, $10; barbecue chicken tortilla salad, $10.

Burgers: Single, $5; double, $8; bacon, $7; bacon double, $9; craft burger of the day, $9.

Tacos, bowls and burritos: rotisserie chicken tinga, $8; Latin smoked brisket, $9; black bean and cheese, $7.

Entrees: Rotisserie chicken, $8 for two pieces, $12 for four pieces or $22 for a whole chicken; Latin-smoked brisket, $10 for a quarter-pound or $17 for a half-pound.

Milkshakes: Mojito, s’more, eggnog, peanut butter, mango, chili chocolate, guava, $8.
