Haney, Somera win Junior Olympic boxing opening matches

Local bantamweights Devin Haney and Dustin Somera won their opening bouts at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Mobile, Ala., on Wednesday.

Haney, a Junior World Team Open champion fighting at 119 pounds, defeated Nikita Ababiy of Brooklyn, N.Y., 3-0, and will face Duke Ragen of Cincinnati in today’s quarterfinals. Somera, also competing at 119 pounds, won a 2-1 decision over Noah Kapner of Gravette, Ark., and will face Michael Dutchover of Midland, Texas, in the quarterfinals.

Henderson’s Andres Cortes, who had a first-round bye in the 132-pound division, faces Andreas Ladd of Toledo, Ohio, in today’s lightweight quarterfinals. The tournament runs through Saturday.
