Diego Magdaleno off Dec. 7 card at Texas Station because of injury

It appears Diego Magdaleno is going to have to wait a little longer for his shot at a world title.

The undefeated super featherweight champion from Las Vegas suffered a chipped bone in his left wrist along with swelling in his left hand and will be sidelined for an indefinite period.

The injury forced Magdaleno (23-0, nine knockouts), the NABF champion, to withdraw from his fight against Adailton De Jesus on Dec. 7 at Texas Station. Had he won the bout, which was to be the main event of a Top Rank card, Magdaleno was to have been given a shot at the WBO crown, held by Rocky Martinez, in February.

"It's disappointing," the 26-year-old Magdaleno said Tuesday. "I was looking forward to putting on a show in Vegas for my fans, staying undefeated, then going after the big prize."

Magdaleno said he first felt pain while sparring last week. When the pain didn't subside, he went to the doctor Tuesday morning.

"This is the first time I've had any kind of injury," Magdaleno said. "The good thing was it wasn't broken, and I won't need any kind of surgery. I just hope it doesn't delay anything as far as fighting for a world title. I want to keep that date in February (with Martinez) if I can."

Magdaleno's departure paved the way for another local unbeaten fighter - welterweight Jessie Vargas - to take over the featured spot at Texas Station. Vargas (20-0, nine KOs) will face Vito Gasparyan (14-2-5, eight KOs) of Glendale, Calif., in the 10-round main event. Azteca America will televise the fight nationally.

Vargas initially was to fight on the early undercard of the Dec. 8 showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.

"It's a great opportunity for Jessie," said Vargas' manager, Cameron Dunkin. "It puts him on national television, and he's in a tough fight. He wins it, it'll only help his visibility."
