UNLV roundup: Men’s golf in seventh at Jack Nicklaus Invitational

The UNLV men's golf team was tied for seventh after the first day of play at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Dublin, Ohio. The Rebels shot 23-over 311 in a tournament delayed due to frost on the course, which allowed for only 18 holes of play Monday, when 36 holes were scheduled.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes, with the final round today.

Oklahoma State led the 11-team field at 7-over 295, seven shots ahead of Kentucky and Brigham Young.

Freshman AJ McInerney led seventh-ranked UNLV with a 1-over 73 to stand tied for fourth, three strokes behind leader Greg Eason of Central Florida.

■ WOMEN'S GOLF - At Sammamish, Wash., UNLV was seventh after the first round of the 16-team Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash. The Rebels shot 20-over 308 to open the three-round event.

Host Washington led at 5-over 293, four shots ahead of UC Irvine.

Demi Mak led UNLV with a 3-over 75, tied for 15th and five shots behind leader Cyd Okino of Washington.

The tournament continues today and Wednesday.

■ WOMEN'S SOCCER - UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell was named Mountain West Conference women's soccer co-defensive player of the week. Wassell, a former Bonanza High School standout, had seven saves in the Rebels' 1-0 win at Air Force.

Wassell has a shutout streak of 301 minutes, 23 seconds, and has six shutouts this season for UNLV (9-2-2), which is on a nine-game unbeaten streak.
