Blaze destroys building formerly used as a bakery

A fire Wednesday morning west of the Strip destroyed a vacant industrial building.

Authorities said residents noticed thick black smoke about 6:30 a.m. at a warehouse at 3701 Sirius Ave., near Valley View Boulevard and Desert Inn Road.

City of Las Vegas firefighters arrived to find flames on the building's roof and called for a second alarm. It took about 75 Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said the building was formerly a bakery and had been vacant for about five years.

The fire caused $500,000 in damage, Szymanski estimated.

Fire investigators hadn't yet gone inside the building as of 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Szymanski said a cause hadn't been determined.
