Bishop Gorman tops Hawaii power
September 2, 2012 - 2:13 am
Bishop Gorman's football team allowed 40 points and 361 yards in the second half on Saturday.
It didn't matter.
The Gaels jumped out to a 28-0 halftime advantage, then used a pair of special teams touchdowns in the third quarter to maintain control on the way to a 52-40 victory over St. Louis (Hawaii) in Honolulu in a game that ended just before 2 a.m. Sunday morning Las Vegas time.
Quarterback Jarrett Solomon passed for 214 yards and three TDs, and also had a 6-yard TD run to lead the Gaels.
Nathan Starks rushed for 105 yards, including a 3-yard TD run, on 20 carries, and also caught a 13-yard TD pass for Gorman.
The Gaels led 28-0 before St. Louis capped its first second-half possession with a 1-yard TD run by backup quarterback Ryder Kuhns with 8:03 to go in the third quarter.
But Gorman would score two TDs before its offense even ran a second-half play. Justin Sweet returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown with 7:50 to go in the quarter. Just over a minute later, Ryan Smith returned a punt 48 yards for a score to push the lead to 42-7.
Smith also caught an 18-yard TD pass from Solomon.
St. Louis' Adam Noga rushed for 191 yards and two TDs on 20 carries. Kuhns, who came on late in the second quarter after starter Kawai Mook-Garcia went down with a right ankle injury, completed 23 of 38 passes for 246 yards and three TDs.
