A 17-year-old Las Vegas boy was killed early Saturday when the car he was a passenger in went out of control and struck a palm tree in the median of Centennial Center Boulevard south of Azure Drive, police said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The driver, Zackery Richardson, 18, was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with serious injuries, according a police news release.

The accident in the northwest Las Vegas Valley occurred at 4 a.m. when a 1991 Nissan driven by Richardson went out of control while heading north on Centennial Center Boulevard. The car slid sideways and struck a palm tree as it crossed over the road's raised median.

It was the 40th traffic-related fatality this year in the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police.
