North Las Vegas man accused in machete attack on girlfriend

A 49-year-old North Las Vegas man is facing a felony attempted murder charge after he was accused of hacking his girlfriend's head with a machete and severing her arms at the wrist before cutting his own neck.

Court documents made public Thursday allege that Armando Vergara-Martinez tried to kill 53-year-old Maria Del Carmen Gomez late March 21 in a convenience store parking lot at Craig Road and North Fifth Street.

Surgeons repaired Gomez's scalp wound and reattached her hands after police found the couple side by side in a pool of blood near an 18-inch machete.

Police said Vergara-Martinez was Gomez's boyfriend. He could face up to 20 years in prison.

He's being held at the Clark County jail on $150,000 bail pending a court evidence hearing Tuesday.
