Pedestrian killed after being struck by car

A 23-year-old woman who lost control of her vehicle drove onto a sidewalk Friday afternoon and struck a 63-year-old woman who later died, Las Vegas police said.

The identity of the dead woman was not released.

Police said the incident occurred about 5:40 p.m. at East Owens Avenue and North Teton Street.

According to evidence and witnesses, Cristina Cortes, 23, was driving a 2005 Dodge Neon east on Owens Avenue when she lost control and drove on the north sidewalk.

The right side of the vehicle struck the female pedestrian, who was walking east of the sidewalk.

The Las Vegas woman was knocked to the ground, and Cortes returned to the roadway. The victim was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

Cortes waited at the scene for police. The incident remains under investigation.

The woman's death is the 39th traffic fatality of 2012 under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police.

Man charged in fentanyl-related death held without bail

A man charged with murder after authorities said he sold fentanyl that led to the death of a 52-year-old man is being held without bail, a Henderson judge said Tuesday.
