Ameristar closes on $16 million purchase of potential Massachusetts casino site

Ameristar Casinos has closed on the $16 million purchase of a 41-acre site in Springfield, Mass., where the Las Vegas-based casino operator wants to place a hotel-casino.

The regional casino operator is one of several companies seeking a single gaming license in Western Massachusetts. The crowded field includes MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming.

"Our proposed resort will directly create thousands of much-needed new jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars of economic development investment to further the revitalization of the demographic center of the region," Ameristar Chief Executive Officer Gordon Kanofsky said in a statement.

The vacant Ameristar site is at Page Boulevard and Interstate Highway 291 in Springfield.

Ameristar's preliminary development plans call for a casino, hotel, restaurants, shops, entertainment and meeting space and a parking garage.
