Woman held after tossing gasoline, match into toddler’s stroller

A 3-year-old boy escaped injury Sunday after an attempt on his life involving arson in the Colorado River community of Needles, Calif., authorities said.

San Bernardino County sheriff's Sgt. Tim Smith said the attempt was averted "only by the grace of God."

Smith said deputies responded about 9 p.m. to a residential area of Needles to reports that a woman had tossed a gasoline-soaked rag and a match into the child's stroller. Smith said the match failed to spark a fire.

Smith said investigators think 57-year-old Elizabeth Smoka of Mohave Valley, Ariz., had been arguing with the boy's mother.

Smoka was held on an attempted murder charge and $1 million bail.
