School district receives big rebate from NV Energy

NV Energy handed a $6.25 million check to Clark County School District on Thursday, making it the largest one-time rebate that the electricity provider has ever given.

And the school district barely had to lift a finger.

Under its Solar Generations program, NV Energy provided and installed solar panels in 25 schools at no cost to the district, which is the reason for the rebate. And the new technology will save the district an estimated $225,000 in annual energy costs.

This record-breaking rebate is just the latest from NV Energy to the district, NV Energy President and CEO Michael Yackira said.

"Not only does this improve the environment," he said. "It improves the district's budget, which we all know is in need."

NV Energy has awarded $7.3 million in rebates to the district since 2004. Including the latest solar addition, energy savings will total $300,000 a year, said Yackira after delivering an oversized novelty check at the School Board's Thursday meeting.

"You see how fast we got down there to touch that check," board member Linda Young said to the crowd. "It's because we need it."
