Collective Soul set to shine poolside

Maybe Collective Soul wasn't as cool as the grunge bands of the mid-'90s, but they've had as much or more staying power.

The rockers helmed by Ed Roland worried more about melodic songs than trends or sounds. "Once you put a title on yourself, you pigeonhole yourself," Roland noted years ago. "Rock 'n' roll allows you to do anything you want. ... It's a full spectrum of emotion and sound. Once you start saying, 'This is who we are,' you're limiting yourself."

The band squeezes one more weekend out of summer with a chance to hear anthems such as "Shine" poolside at the Hard Rock Hotel. Tickets are $34.50 for the 9:30 p.m. Saturday show at 4455 Paradise Road; call 693-5583.
