April storm chills valley with rain, snow

Southern Nevada is flirting with weather records in April.

The 92 degrees recorded April 1 tied an all-time high for that day of the year set in 1966. On Saturday, a high of 56 nearly tied a historic low high of 54 for April 9 set in 1943, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow that fell in the western part of Las Vegas Valley on Saturday was so light it was not measurable by any official means; but fall it did along with occasional spits of rain, however briefly, as temperatures hovered roughly 20 degrees cooler than average in Las Vegas.

Intermittent rain peppered the valley Saturday afternoon as the cold front moved through Southern Nevada and into Arizona and Utah, according to the National Weather Service.

The Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort reported 1 inch of snow as of 5 p.m. today, although it received 8 inches on Friday. Sunday is the last day for winter activities at the resort.

The forecast for the coming week is more promising, with temperatures in the mid 70s expected by Tuesday.

Sunday won’t quite reach 70, but the expected high of 67 is 11 degrees warmer than Saturday’s high. Lows will be in the mid to high 40s for the remainder of the week and moderate winds are expected, according to weatherunderground.com.
