Ex-process server pleads not guilty to 17 new charges

Convicted former process server Maurice Carroll pleaded not guilty Thursday to 17 new felony forgery charges stemming from a scheme to file false affidavits.

District Judge Michelle Leavitt set a June 14 trial date.

Carroll, 42, a former Las Vegas police officer who ran the unlicensed process-serving company, On Scene Mediations, was released on $51,000 bail last week.

The forgery case evolved from allegations Carroll schemed to file false affidavits in Justice Court cases involving one of his former clients, debt collector Richland Holdings.

A jury in October convicted Carroll on 17 perjury charges, 17 charges of filing false affidavits and one charge of obtaining money under false pretenses.

Last month, District Judge Elissa Cadish granted him a new trial on the perjury charges, but let stand the other convictions. He is free on another $35,000 bail on those charges while he awaits sentencing.

Prosecutors ended up filing the forgery case against Carroll as a result of testimony from his own witnesses at a hearing last month before Cadish.
