Former process server jailed on new felony charges

Convicted former process server Maurice Carroll was taken into custody in court Tuesday on 17 new felony forgery charges stemming from an affidavits scheme.

Carroll, who was indicted on the additional charges last week, had showed up with his lawyer seeking to quash an arrest warrant and remain free on the $35,000 bail in his other criminal case.

Attorney Michael Morey told District Judge Michelle Leavitt that Carroll could not afford the $51,000 bond on the new charges.

But after Chief Deputy District Attorney Mike Staudaher pressed for the additional bail, Leavitt ordered Carroll detained until he posted it. Court marshals handcuffed Carroll and had him taken to the Clark County Detention Center for booking.

Leavitt set a Feb. 24 arraignment for Carroll, who once ran the unlicensed process serving company, On Scene Mediations.

Carroll, 42, a former Las Vegas police officer, had won a new trial last month on 17 perjury charges stemming from his submission of false affidavits in Justice Court.

But District Judge Elissa Cadish, who handled that case, let stand Carroll's convictions on 17 related counts of filing false affidavits and one count of obtaining money under false pretenses.

As a result of testimony from Carroll's own witnesses at a hearing before Cadish, prosecutors ended up filing the new forgery charges over the same affidavits.
