Woman indicted in man’s 2009 death

A Las Vegas woman was indicted Wednesday on charges relating to the slaying of a man who was dating the former girlfriend of her brother-in-law.

Sandra Macias, 27, and her husband, Paul Lopez, are charged with the Dec. 20, 2009, slaying of Antonio Garcia.

Garcia was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head in the trunk of his Toyota sedan, which was ablaze when firefighters reached it near Cheyenne and Owens avenues.

Prosecutors say Randy Lopez, who is serving a life prison term for another slaying, had Macias and his brother, Paul Lopez, kill Garcia. The victim was dating Randy Lopez's ex-girlfriend at the time.

Randy Lopez was caught on a prison phone talking about his brother's involvement in the killing, prosecutors said. The Lopez brothers are members of the Rebel 13 gang, prosecutors said.

Macias faces one count each of murder with use of a deadly weapon, armed robbery and arson and two counts of conspiracy. She is being held without bail in the Clark County Detention Center.

Defense attorney Jack Buchanan argued for a $25,000 bail so Macias could be with her 11-year-old daughter and return to her job as a manager at a local sandwich shop.

Buchanan also said prosecutors did not properly serve Macias with notice that her case was being taken to the grand jury, something that will be addressed at a later date before District Judge Ken Cory.

An arraignment was set for Feb. 16.
