Mesquite hosts Golden Gloves regionals

Ten Nevada amateur boxers will fight for a spot in next month's Golden Gloves National Tournament at the West Regionals today and Sunday in Mesquite.

Boxers from Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Arizona will compete at the CasaBlanca Event Center with the winners advancing to nationals, to be held April 25 to 30 in Indianapolis.

Las Vegas will be represented by Luis Cortez at 123 pounds, Parnell Fisher at 132 pounds, Kyron Butler at 141 pounds, Kevin Newman at 165 pounds, Andrew Tabiti at 201 pounds and Rydell Gipson at heavyweight.

Mesquite will be represented by Daniel Ramirez at 152 pounds and Brandon Everett at 178 pounds. Reno's Vasquez brothers -- Santos, the 108-pound state champion, and Oscar, the 114-pound state winner -- will also compete.

Today's semifinals begin at 5 p.m. with Sunday's championship bouts beginning at noon.
